Our stop in Grodås was a great choice for a short break on your road trip from Ålesund to the glaciers. The town itself is simple, with not much going on, but that makes it a peaceful spot to rest. Its main draw is its proximity to Hornindalsvatnet, Norway’s deepest lake. Hornindalsvatnet is a fascinating body of water. It’s so deep, it’s believed to be the deepest lake in all of Europe, with a maximum depth of around 1,686 feet. The surface is a remarkable 170 feet below sea level, and its waters are so clear that you can see up to 100 feet down. The water is incredibly cold, even in the summer, with temperatures rarely rising above 40°F (4°C) at depth. This is a very clean lake, and its waters are so pure that they’re used as drinking water for the surrounding communities. Even though it’s a deep and large lake, there are no ferries that cross it.
