Our visit to Paleopolis in Gannat, France was more than just a family outing—it felt like stepping into a time capsule that transported us millions of years into the past. Gannat, nestled in the Allier department of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is not only a charming town with deep historical roots, but also a site of extraordinary paleontological significance. The discovery of fossilized bones in the Gannat basin, including those of Diaceratherium lemanense—a hornless rhinoceros species from the Eocene-Miocene era—marked the beginning of a scientific journey that continues to captivate researchers and visitors alike. These finds, dating back 23 million years, revealed a tropical landscape once dominated by lakes, crocodiles, birds, and small mammals, all of which left their mark in the fossil-rich soil of the region. Paleopolis, perched on the hills overlooking Gannat, is a theme park that celebrates this prehistoric heritage with an engaging blend of education and entertainment. From life-sized dinosaur models to immersive exhibitions and workshops, the park offers a vivid look into the evolution of life on Earth. We were especially impressed by the scientific depth of the displays and the interactive experiences that allowed us to imagine ourselves as paleontologists uncovering ancient secrets. One thoughtful touch we truly appreciated was the addition of a dedicated camper parking area near the entrance, even if it’s only available for day use—it made our visit so much more convenient. France as a whole has a rich history of dinosaur discoveries. From the Jura Mountains to Provence, the country has yielded fossils of iconic species like the Iguanodon and the formidable Tarascosaurus. The French paleontological tradition dates back to the early 19th century, with figures like Baron Cuvier—often considered the father of paleontology—studying bones found in places like Gannat. Today, France remains a key player in the global study of prehistoric life, with museums, dig sites, and parks like Paleopolis continuing to inspire curiosity and wonder. Walking through Paleopolis, surrounded by reconstructions of creatures that once roamed the Earth, we felt a profound connection to the deep history beneath our feet. It’s remarkable to think that this quiet town in central France holds such a vital piece of the puzzle of life’s ancient past.
