Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is a charming seaside village located in the heart of the Camargue, in southern France. Surrounded by lagoons, salt flats, and the Mediterranean Sea, it is a place where nature, culture, and spirituality come together in a unique way. Known for its whitewashed houses, its church dedicated to the Saintes Maries, and its deep traditions, this small town captures the true soul of Provence and the Camargue. Throughout history, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer has been a place of pilgrimage and legend. According to tradition, Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome, and Mary Jacobe arrived here from Palestine after the Resurrection, bringing Christianity to the region. The Romanesque church in the center of the village, with its fortress-like structure, has been a place of devotion for centuries. Every May, thousands of pilgrims come to honor the saints and Saint Sarah, the patron saint of the Gypsies, in one of the most colorful and emotional celebrations in southern France. Over the years, we have visited Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer many times, and one of our most memorable stays was when we spent New Year’s Eve there with our camper. That time, we parked in the lot on Avenue du Dr Cambon, which turned out to be a very convenient and quiet location, perfect for enjoying the festive atmosphere of the village. Another excellent option for campers is the Aire Camping-Car George Pompidou, which is also very comfortable and well-equipped. Nearby, there is an excellent bakery, Le Fournil Saintois, ideal for fresh bread and croissants in the morning, and a supermarket not far away for any other needs. There is another camper area outside the village, but it is farther from the center and less practical if you want to explore the town on foot. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is not just a destination; it is a feeling — a mix of sea breeze, flamingos flying over the marshes, and the sound of guitars during the festivals. Whether you come for a few hours or stay for days in a camper, it is a place that stays in your heart and always calls you back.
