Novi Ligure is a historic town in Piedmont, strategically located between Genoa and Milan. During our camper van journey, we stayed at the parking area of the Circolo Ricreativo Culturale A. Repetto, a practical and well-organized spot that provided easy access to the town’s amenities and attractions. Novi Ligure’s history is deeply rooted in trade and industry. Founded in the Middle Ages, the town flourished as a key stop along the salt and spice routes connecting the Po Valley to the Ligurian coast. Its strategic location made it an important commercial center, and by the 19th century, the arrival of the railway further boosted its economic growth. Novi Ligure became known for its textile mills and, most famously, its chocolate production. The town’s chocolate tradition began in the early 20th century, when local entrepreneurs established some of Italy’s most iconic chocolate brands. Novi, founded in 1919, became synonymous with high-quality chocolate, particularly its famous “Cremino” and gianduiotti. The legacy of Novi and other local producers continues to shape the town’s identity, and visitors can still find historic chocolate shops and factories in the area. Novi Ligure’s town center is functional and welcoming. The weekly market offers fresh produce and local goods, while the main streets are lined with cafes, bakeries, and shops. For those interested in history, the Museo dei Campionissimi celebrates the town’s cycling legends, and the nearby hills of Gavi provide opportunities for wine tasting and scenic walks.
