Travelling often creates memories that have little to do with famous monuments or spectacular landscapes. Sometimes, a simple and unexpected gesture says far more about a place than any guidebook ever could. One such moment took place during an evening at Pizzeria San Vito, located in the gastronomic market of Els Magazinos in Dénia.

San Vito is not a new restaurant. It first opened in 1993, founded by Giovanni Stanisci Senior and his wife Reme, becoming a well-known family pizzeria in Dénia before closing in 2011. More than a decade later, Giovanni Stanisci Junior revived the family business, reopening it in 2024 while preserving the original philosophy of traditional Italian pizza prepared with modern techniques and high-quality ingredients.

The meal itself was excellent, but what remained most memorable was not the food.

Dinner took place outdoors on a cool Mediterranean evening. The temperature was comfortable enough to remain outside, certainly nothing comparable to what would normally be considered a cold evening in the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, the staff noticed that several guests might appreciate a little more warmth.

Without anyone asking, blankets were quietly brought to the outdoor tables.

It was a small gesture, but one that immediately changed the atmosphere. Rather than simply serving food, the staff were paying attention to the comfort of their guests. There was no unnecessary formality and no attempt to make the moment special; it was simply a natural expression of hospitality.

Experiences like this often become the lasting memory of a journey. Good food can be found almost anywhere, but genuine attention to customers is much harder to forget. The willingness to anticipate a guest’s needs before being asked reflects the kind of family-run hospitality that has helped make San Vito popular with both local residents and visitors.

That philosophy is also reflected in the restaurant itself. Every pizza is prepared using handcrafted dough with a long double fermentation process, while the menu combines traditional Italian recipes with more contemporary creations using carefully selected ingredients. Since reopening, the restaurant has quickly gained recognition both locally and nationally, with several publications highlighting its return and the quality of its pizzas.

Looking back, the blankets became the detail that best represented the evening. The weather was only slightly cool, yet the staff chose to make every guest feel comfortable without being prompted. It was a thoughtful gesture that transformed an ordinary dinner into a memorable experience and perfectly illustrated how genuine hospitality is often found in the smallest details.
