During our stay at Castilleja de Guzmán, one of the things that immediately caught our attention was the constant stream of aircraft approaching and departing from Seville Airport. Standing on the high ground west of the city, it is easy to spend hours watching Airbus and Boeing aircraft descending surprisingly low before disappearing behind the skyline. Many visitors wonder whether this is normal. It is. In fact, the geography of the Guadalquivir Valley and the position of the airport make this one of the best places in Andalucía to observe commercial aviation from the ground.

When Seville Airport was built in the early twentieth century, the surrounding landscape was almost entirely agricultural. Castilleja de Guzmán was a small village surrounded by olive groves, while many of today’s residential districts simply did not exist. Aircraft flew over open countryside, not housing estates. During the following decades Seville expanded westwards, gradually growing beneath flight paths that had already existed for many years. The aeroplanes did not move closer to the city; the city gradually expanded towards the airport.

The aircraft appear unusually low because they are already established on the standard three-degree glide path used for landing. By the time an airliner reaches the western side of Seville it has already descended to only a few thousand feet, giving the impression that it is almost overhead. Departures follow a similar pattern in reverse. Heavy aircraft, particularly during the hot Andalusian summer, may climb more slowly, remaining clearly visible above the western suburbs for several minutes.

Although Seville Airport has always maintained a good safety record, several important events have marked its history.

The earliest accidents associated with commercial aviation in southern Andalucía occurred in 1939. On 17 October, an Ala Littoria Savoia-Marchetti S.73 flying to Melilla encountered dense fog near Málaga. The crew descended in an attempt to regain visual contact with the ground before the aircraft struck high terrain, killing everyone on board. Only two months later, on 18 December, an Iberia Junkers Ju 52 disappeared into the sea during a storm after departing from Tétouan. Both accidents happened near Málaga rather than Seville and reflect how difficult flying could be before radar, satellite navigation and modern weather forecasting.

The first major accident directly connected with Seville Airport occurred on 12 October 1962, when an Iberia Convair CV-440 arriving from Valencia crashed during its approach. All eighteen occupants lost their lives. At the time, navigation aids and approach procedures were far less sophisticated than they are today, and controlled flight into terrain remained a significant risk throughout the aviation industry.

Not every serious event involved an accident. On 23 June 1998, an Iberia Boeing 727 departing Seville was hijacked by a passenger claiming to have a bomb and demanding to be flown to Tel Aviv. The aircraft diverted to Valencia, where police established that the threat was false and the hijacker eventually surrendered peacefully. Nobody was injured.

On 18 March 2006, an Air Algérie Boeing 737-600 suffered a collapse of its landing gear after touching down at Seville. The aircraft came to rest on the runway and forty-five people sustained minor injuries, while the airport remained closed during the recovery operation.

Another event demonstrated how modern crew training can prevent an accident from becoming a tragedy. On 20 April 2011, a Vueling Airbus A320 arriving from Barcelona experienced a nose-wheel malfunction that left the wheel turned sideways. After a low pass to allow controllers to confirm the problem visually, the crew carried out a successful emergency landing. All 150 people on board escaped unharmed.

The most significant aviation accident in Seville’s recent history occurred on 9 May 2015, when an Airbus A400M Atlas military transport aircraft crashed shortly after take-off during a test flight. A software error prevented several engines from delivering normal power, leaving the crew unable to maintain altitude while attempting to return to the airport. The aircraft crashed in an industrial area north of the airport near La Rinconada. Four crew members died and two survived with serious injuries. The investigation led to software modifications and changes to Airbus testing procedures, while several countries temporarily suspended A400M operations until the cause had been fully understood.

Watching aircraft today, it is easy to forget how much commercial aviation has changed since those earlier accidents. Modern airliners are equipped with systems such as Ground Proximity Warning Systems, Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems, satellite navigation, digital flight management computers and highly accurate instrument approaches. Crew Resource Management training has transformed cockpit decision-making, while air traffic control technology is far more advanced than it was only a few decades ago.

Noise has also become an important issue as Seville has continued to expand. Aena now applies a range of measures designed to reduce the impact on surrounding communities, including Continuous Descent Operations, which allow aircraft to descend smoothly with lower engine power, performance-based navigation procedures that keep aircraft on more accurate tracks, and continuous monitoring of aircraft noise around the airport. Newer aircraft such as the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX are also significantly quieter than the generations they replace.

Standing above Seville today, it is difficult not to be impressed by the rhythm of modern aviation. Every landing looks routine, every departure follows a precise path and hundreds of thousands of passengers pass through the airport each year without incident. Yet behind that apparent simplicity lies decades of technological progress and lessons learned from the events that shaped the airport’s history. Observing the aircraft from the hills west of Seville is therefore more than simple plane spotting; it is a reminder of how dramatically aviation has evolved, turning what was once an uncertain and often hazardous form of transport into one of the safest ways to travel.
