Haut-Martelange is one of those places where understanding what lies beneath the ground completely changes the way the landscape looks. At first it appears to be a very small settlement in the far west of Luxembourg, almost pressed against the Belgian border. In reality, however, this was once one of the country’s most important industrial sites. For nearly two centuries, an entire community developed around the extraction of slate, with underground mines, workshops, railway tracks, workers’ houses, offices and machinery concentrated in a narrow area between Haut-Martelange, Martelange, Rombach-Martelange and Perlé. Today much of that industrial world survives as the Musée de l’Ardoise, the Slate Museum, but to understand the museum properly it helps first to understand the stone itself.
Slate is not simply a dark rock that happens to break into flat pieces. It begins its life as very fine mud and clay deposited on the bottom of an ancient sea. The slate around Martelange belongs to rocks of the Lower Devonian and is roughly 408 million years old. At that time there was obviously no Luxembourg, Belgium or Ardennes landscape here. Fine sediment accumulated layer after layer beneath the water and was gradually buried and compacted into mudstone and shale.
That was only the first stage. Much later, enormous geological forces compressed and deformed these rocks during mountain building. Heat was present, but not enough to melt them. Instead the original clay minerals recrystallised and microscopic minerals such as mica became aligned roughly parallel to one another. This process created what geologists call slaty cleavage.
That cleavage is the reason slate is so useful. A good piece of slate can be split repeatedly into remarkably thin, broad and almost perfectly flat sheets. The planes along which it splits are not necessarily the original layers of sediment; they were created later by geological pressure. This is what separates true roofing slate from an ordinary slab of shale. Shale may break along its original sedimentary layers, whereas high-quality slate has a strong, regular cleavage that allows a skilled worker to divide a thick block into thin sheets without the whole piece crumbling.
The local stone is generally blue-grey and has a particularly pronounced cleavage. It is dense, durable, resistant to frost and absorbs very little water. Those properties explain why slate became such an important roofing material. A roof covered with correctly prepared slate can survive for generations, while the individual pieces are relatively thin and much lighter than thick slabs of ordinary stone. Slate was also used for wall cladding, flooring, writing boards, electrical components and many smaller architectural objects.
The rock around Martelange occurs in what geologists now call the Martelange Member. The productive slate does not form one enormous uniform underground block. Instead, exploitable layers run through the region in bands. Historical mining developed along several roughly parallel zones running from the Belgian side through Martelange and Rombach-Martelange, through Haut-Martelange and Wolwelange, and farther towards Perlé. This is why the slate industry cannot really be understood as belonging to a single modern village. The geology ignores today’s international border.
That border makes the area particularly unusual. Martelange itself is in Belgium, in the Province of Luxembourg, while Haut-Martelange and Rombach-Martelange are in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Along part of the main road the frontier effectively follows the road itself, producing the curious situation in which properties on one side are Belgian while those on the other are Luxembourgish. The modern line on a map therefore cuts directly across a landscape whose geology, industry and communities developed as one area.
Slate had been known and used here long before industrial mining began. Documentary evidence shows slate being supplied from the western part of Luxembourg around the end of the Middle Ages, and geological research records references to slate production around Martelange several centuries ago. The decisive change came during the eighteenth century, when the local deposits began to be exploited on an industrial scale.
The first major underground workings at Haut-Martelange opened towards the end of the eighteenth century. From around 1790 onwards, the hills increasingly became an underground industrial landscape. The reason for going underground rather than simply quarrying everything from the surface was partly geological. Rock exposed close to the surface is attacked by water, frost and weathering. Good roofing slate had to be compact, fresh and capable of splitting cleanly. Miners therefore followed the useful layers underground until they reached sound stone.
The traditional extraction system produced enormous underground chambers. In the Martelange region, miners commonly reached the useful formations through inclined shafts and then opened individual chambers inside the slate. Geological studies describe chambers roughly twelve to fourteen metres long along the cleavage, separated by thick pillars of untouched rock which helped support the mine. Extraction then progressed downwards in stages.
Early mining depended heavily on human labour. Men worked with picks, hammers, wedges and chisels, opening the rock and separating large blocks from the underground face. Getting those blocks out was only the beginning. A block that looked enormous underground ultimately had to be transformed into thin roofing tiles.
The slate was brought to the surface and taken to the workshops. There it was reduced into more manageable blocks and examined for fractures and the direction of the cleavage. Skilled workers then split the stone repeatedly. A thick piece became two thinner pieces, each of those could become two more, and the process continued until the required thickness was reached. The final pieces were trimmed into regular shapes and pierced so that they could be fixed to a roof.
This required a remarkable understanding of the stone. Slate is easy to split only if the worker reads the rock correctly. Strike it in the wrong direction and a valuable block can break unpredictably and become waste. A skilled slate splitter therefore combined strength with precision. The finished roof tile may appear simple, but producing it involved geological knowledge learnt through years of practical work.
Water was another constant problem. Every underground mine gradually collects groundwater, and the deeper the workings became, the more important pumping became. By the second half of the nineteenth century, steam engines were being used at Haut-Martelange to hoist rock, operate pumps and drive machinery in the workshops through transmission systems. From around 1900, pneumatic equipment increasingly replaced some of the most exhausting manual work underground.
The industrial complex above ground grew with the mines. Haut-Martelange eventually became much more than a hole in the hillside. There were workshops, administrative buildings, accommodation, transport infrastructure and houses associated with the workers and owners. The present museum preserves twenty-two authentic buildings, which is one of the reasons the place feels more like a preserved industrial village than a conventional museum.
By the end of the nineteenth century the quarries were producing millions of roofing slates each year. In the 1890s the German Rother family gradually acquired the local mining companies and much of the housing associated with them. Production was concentrated in the most efficient workings and Haut-Martelange became the dominant Luxembourg site.
Transport was crucial to that development. Slate is heavy, and moving millions of individual roofing pieces by horse and cart placed an obvious limit on how far the industry could expand. The arrival of the narrow-gauge railway in 1890 transformed the situation. Haut-Martelange became connected with the Noerdange–Martelange line, generally remembered as the Jhangeli, allowing finished slate to be transported much more efficiently towards the wider railway network and customers across Europe.
That railway also helps explain the old tracks and industrial railway atmosphere still visible around the museum. Transport was not an addition to the slate industry; it was one of the things that allowed the quarries to grow into a major business.
Working underground remained extremely difficult. Darkness, humidity, low temperatures, heavy stone, dust and the constant danger associated with unstable rock were ordinary parts of the job. Some workers began very young. Former employees involved with the museum have described entering the industry at only fourteen years old, learning to split and work slate while spending long days around the mines and workshops.
The industry nevertheless supported hundreds of families and shaped the whole region. At its height in the early twentieth century, Haut-Martelange was one of the principal employers in this part of Luxembourg. The mines were not simply supplying a decorative building material; they were the economic reason for much of the settlement around them.
Eventually, however, the economics changed. Alternative roofing materials became increasingly common, while cheaper slate could be imported from abroad. A mine in Luxembourg, with deep underground workings, pumps, labour-intensive splitting and an extensive industrial site, struggled to compete on price. The last Luxembourg slate mine at Haut-Martelange finally closed in 1986.
Closure could easily have erased almost two centuries of industrial history. The underground workings could have been sealed, the buildings demolished and the machinery scrapped. Instead, residents from the surrounding villages created the Frënn vun der Lee — the Friends of Slate — in 1992. Their aim was to preserve the mines and explain what had happened here rather than allowing the site to disappear.
The municipality of Rambrouch acquired the principal industrial buildings, village structures and underground workings in 1993. Restoration then continued gradually for decades, involving volunteers, public authorities and former workers. The result is today’s Musée de l’Ardoise.
The museum is particularly successful because the industrial site itself is the main exhibit. Visitors are not looking at a reconstructed mine built inside a modern museum building. They are walking among the actual workshops, railway infrastructure, industrial buildings and underground workings in which slate was produced.
The new visitor mine, Johanna, makes the geology and working conditions even easier to understand. The route descends to around 42 metres below ground and involves approximately 370 steps. The temperature underground remains around 9°C, even when it is warm outside. The galleries contain lighting and audiovisual installations, but the rock, chambers, water and mine itself are real.
The descent also makes the enormous difference between the finished product and its source very obvious. A roofing slate is a thin, light-looking rectangle. Underground, however, it begins as part of a massive body of rock surrounding a chamber. The entire industrial process existed to select the right part of that rock, detach it, lift it to the surface, divide it along its cleavage and transform it into something only a few millimetres thick.
Water is still present underground today. Some abandoned workings have filled, creating subterranean pools and lakes. They are a reminder that keeping a mine accessible once extraction stops is very different from operating it continuously with pumps. Nature begins reclaiming the underground space almost immediately.
Above ground, the museum continues through the workshops and machinery. The small industrial train provides another connection with the old transport system, while the Bopebistro occupies the social side of the site. This matters because Haut-Martelange was never only about geology and machines. It was also a community in which miners, stone splitters, engineers, families and owners lived beside the industry.
The outdoor site and above-ground buildings can currently be explored free of charge during opening hours, while admission applies to the Johanna underground mine. In 2026 the museum opens from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 6 PM, with Monday normally closed. The underground route is accessible from the age of four, which makes it unusually suitable for families compared with many former mines. Closed shoes and a jacket are sensible because of the temperature and the large number of steps.
The wider area is worth understanding at the same time. Haut-Martelange belongs to the Luxembourg commune of Rambrouch, whereas Martelange directly beside it is Belgian. Rombach-Martelange lies on the Luxembourg side of the border, and Perlé, a little farther away, had its own slate workings. Geological studies show three principal parallel mining bands through this small border region. What appears on a modern road map as several settlements in two different countries was therefore one connected slate district underground.
Martelange on the Belgian side had its own slate industry as well. The main road later became famous for the peculiar international boundary running through the settlement, but long before modern petrol stations made the border economically conspicuous, slate already linked both sides. The rock layer continued beneath the frontier regardless of which government controlled the surface.
This is probably the most interesting way to understand Haut-Martelange. It is not simply “a museum about slate”. The entire place exists because of slate. The location of the buildings, the railway, the neighbouring settlements, the underground chambers and even part of the economic history of this border region were determined by one geological layer formed in an ancient sea more than 400 million years ago.
A piece of roofing slate therefore contains several completely different histories at once. It begins with Devonian mud settling beneath seawater. Geological pressure turns that mudstone into a rock with a strong cleavage. Miners follow the best layers deep underground. Heavy blocks are hoisted to the surface. Skilled workers split them into sheets only millimetres thick. Railway wagons carry those finished pieces across Europe. Houses are roofed with them for decades or even centuries.
At Haut-Martelange, almost every stage of that chain can still be understood in the place where it actually happened.
That is what makes the Slate Museum so different from a conventional collection of objects. The museum is the mine, the workshops, the railway, the workers’ settlement and the geology beneath them. Martelange and the surrounding border region make sense only when the slate beneath the ground is included in the story. What looks today like a tiny village on the edge of Luxembourg was once one of the country’s oldest and most specialised industrial centres, built around the unusual ability of a 400-million-year-old rock to split into a sheet thin enough to cover a roof.
