ne of the biggest surprises of our journey through Portugal came in the very last corner of Europe. Standing at the edge of the Atlantic in Sagres, we certainly were not expecting to eat one of the best pizzas of the entire trip. Yet that is exactly what happened.
After several days travelling across the Algarve, we decided to stop at Arte Bianca – Cucina Italiana – Sagres, an Italian restaurant housed inside a beautifully restored former ice factory only a short walk from Mareta Beach. The restaurant focuses on authentic Italian cuisine, with pizzas made from dough matured for more than 72 hours using natural sourdough and carefully selected Italian ingredients.
From the very first bite we realised this was something special. The pizza had exactly the qualities we always hope to find: a beautifully risen Neapolitan crust, light and airy inside, slightly crisp around the edge and incredibly easy to digest. The tomato sauce was balanced, the mozzarella full of flavour without overwhelming the other ingredients, and everything tasted fresh rather than overloaded. It was one of those meals where every element simply worked together perfectly.
What impressed us even more was the consistency. It was not simply a good pizza for Portugal—it was an outstanding pizza by Italian standards. After travelling through several countries, finding such attention to detail so far from Italy came as a genuine surprise and quickly turned dinner into one of the most memorable meals of the journey.
The atmosphere contributed just as much as the food. The restaurant combines modern design with natural materials such as wood, iron and marble, creating a welcoming environment that reflects the philosophy of returning to traditional craftsmanship while using high-quality ingredients. Families are particularly well catered for thanks to a dedicated children’s play area, making it a comfortable place to relax after a day exploring the dramatic coastline around Sagres.
Looking back, this was far more than just another dinner stop. After so many kilometres on the road, sitting down to a truly exceptional pizza in one of Europe’s most remote corners felt unexpected and strangely comforting. It reminded us that memorable food is not always found where you expect it, and that sometimes one of the highlights of a journey comes from something as simple as a perfectly made pizza shared after a long day of travelling.
If you are visiting Sagres and enjoy authentic Italian cuisine, we would not hesitate to recommend Arte Bianca. For us, it was one of the finest meals of the entire Portuguese journey and proof that outstanding Neapolitan pizza can be found even at the very edge of the Atlantic.
