While staying in Furth im Wald, we became curious about the town’s most famous tradition: the annual Drachenstich, which takes place every August. The Drachenstich, or “Dragon Slaying Festival,” is one of the oldest folk festivals in Germany, with a history that stretches back for centuries. Every year, the town comes alive with historical performances, parades, and celebrations centered around the legend of a dragon. Today, the festival is famous throughout Germany and attracts thousands of visitors who come to experience this unique blend of history, theater, and local tradition. Since our visit did not coincide with the festival itself, we decided to learn more by visiting the local dragon museum. The museum was quite small, and we felt that the admission price was a little higher than we expected for its size. However, despite being small and not particularly cheap, we still enjoyed the visit very much. The museum does an excellent job of explaining the history of the Drachenstich and its importance to the town. We learned how the festival evolved over the centuries and how it became such an important part of Furth im Wald’s identity. The exhibits provide interesting insights into the costumes, performances, and traditions that have been passed down through generations. One of the highlights was learning about the famous dragon itself. The modern mechanical dragon, known as “Tradinno,” is considered one of the largest walking robots in the world. Seeing the technology and craftsmanship behind this impressive creature helped us understand why the festival has become such a popular attraction. Although the museum can be explored fairly quickly, it offers a fascinating introduction to a tradition that is deeply rooted in local culture. By the time we left, we felt we had gained a much better appreciation of the festival and the pride that the people of Furth im Wald take in preserving it. Looking back, we are glad that we visited. Even though the museum was small and the entrance fee felt a little expensive, the experience was enjoyable and informative. It allowed us to connect with the history of the town and discover a tradition that has made Furth im Wald famous far beyond the borders of Bavaria. If you happen to visit Furth im Wald outside the festival season, the museum is still well worth considering. It offers a glimpse into one of Germany’s most unique cultural events and helps bring the story of the famous dragon to life.
