Not every improvement to a motorhome involves expensive equipment or major modifications. During our journey through Scandinavia, one of the simplest additions turned out to be one of the most appreciated: sheepskin-style seat covers for the cab seats.
At first, we chose them mainly for comfort. Long driving days mean spending many hours behind the wheel, and the original upholstery can become tiring over time. The soft sheepskin-style covers immediately made the seats feel more comfortable, especially on longer stages of the journey.
What surprised us most was how well they worked throughout the changing Nordic climate. On cold mornings, the seats no longer felt icy when we first got into the cab. Instead, the covers provided a pleasant layer of insulation that made setting off much more comfortable, particularly before the heating had warmed the interior.
Many people assume that sheepskin is only suitable for winter, but our experience was different. During the summer it was never uncomfortable enough to make us regret the choice. With the windows open or the air conditioning running while driving, the slightly warmer surface was barely noticeable. The extra comfort easily outweighed any small increase in temperature.
Another advantage was how the cab felt afterwards. The soft texture gave the interior a much warmer and more welcoming appearance, making it feel less like a commercial vehicle and more like a comfortable living space. Even a simple change like this altered the atmosphere every time we opened the doors.
We also appreciated the practical side. The covers protected the original upholstery from everyday wear, something particularly useful when travelling for long periods and getting in and out of the cab several times each day. After dusty walks, beach visits or rainy weather, it was reassuring to know that the original seats remained protected underneath.
For our camper, we chose synthetic sheepskin rather than natural wool. It offered the same cosy appearance while being easier to maintain, more resistant to everyday use and better suited to life on the road. It also dried quickly if it became damp and required very little maintenance during the trip.
Sheepskin has a long history in Scandinavia. For centuries it has been used to provide warmth and comfort in homes, sledges and vehicles throughout the Nordic countries. Modern synthetic versions continue that tradition while offering greater durability and easier care, making them particularly practical for motorhome travel.
Looking back, this small modification gave us far more comfort than we expected. It cost very little compared with most camper accessories, yet we appreciated it every single day. Sometimes the best upgrades are not the most expensive ones, but the simple improvements that quietly make every journey a little more enjoyable.
