One of the most memorable experiences of our journey through Denmark did not involve driving, hiking or sightseeing. It was something much simpler: spending an hour in a private sauna overlooking Mariager Fjord. After days of travelling, it became the perfect opportunity to slow down and experience a tradition that has long been part of Nordic life.

We booked the private sauna at Mariager Camping, where a traditional wooden sauna barrel sits just a few metres from the water. Looking out across the calm fjord while surrounded by warm timber and complete silence created an atmosphere that is difficult to describe until you experience it yourself. The sauna is available for private hire for up to six people, allowing visitors to enjoy it without sharing the space with strangers.

What impressed us most was not luxury or extravagance, but the simplicity of the experience. There were no distractions, no loud music and no crowded wellness centre. It was just the warmth of the sauna, the fresh Nordic air outside and the peaceful view across the fjord. As the heat built up, looking through the window towards the water made the whole experience feel even more relaxing.

Saunas have been part of Nordic culture for thousands of years. Although Finland is most closely associated with them, Denmark has increasingly embraced the tradition, particularly in recent years. Across the country, it is now common to find small saunas beside the sea, lakes and fjords, where the experience is closely connected with nature rather than with large spa complexes.

The idea behind a Nordic sauna is very different from simply getting warm. It is about slowing down, disconnecting from everyday life and enjoying the contrast between heat and fresh air. Many Danes step outside between sauna sessions, breathing the cool air or even taking a swim before returning to the warmth. Along the coast, this contrast becomes part of the experience itself.

Mariager Fjord provides an ideal setting for this tradition. Often described as Denmark’s most beautiful fjord, its sheltered waters and surrounding forests create a calm landscape that naturally encourages relaxation. Sitting inside the sauna while looking out across the still water gave us a completely different appreciation of the fjord than we had experienced during our walks around the town.

The campsite has clearly embraced this Nordic philosophy. Alongside its modern facilities, it offers private sauna hire, kayaking, paddleboarding and direct access to the fjord, encouraging visitors to spend time outdoors rather than simply using the campsite as a place to sleep.

Looking back, this became one of the most enjoyable moments of our Scandinavian journey. Travelling by motorhome often means constantly discovering new places, but occasionally the best experience comes from stopping completely. For an hour, nothing mattered except the warmth of the wood, the quiet view across the fjord and the feeling of complete relaxation.

If there is one experience that captures the Danish approach to wellbeing, it is this: combining nature, simplicity and time together. Our evening beside Mariager Fjord reminded us that some of the most memorable moments of travel are not always found in famous attractions, but in the opportunity to pause and simply enjoy where you are.
