We stopped at a small esplanade beside the N-230 road, overlooking the Escales Reservoir near Sopeira. Even after heavy rain, the ground remained firm, and there was plenty of space for our 23-foot-long motorhome. The location felt a little spooky, and traffic on the nearby road was noticeable during the day. Otherwise, it was quiet, and nobody bothered us.
The view over the reservoir was good, and parking was completely free. Unfortunately, the ground was dirty, which took away from the overall condition of the place. This is a basic stop without dedicated motorhome facilities, so it is best suited to a short break rather than a stay requiring services.
The parking area is in the Ribagorza region of Aragón, close to the border with Catalonia. The reservoir lies on the Noguera Ribagorzana River and extends for approximately eight kilometres towards El Pont de Suert. Its dam was built in 1955, mainly to produce hydroelectric power. The surrounding landscape includes steep rocky slopes, wooded hillsides and the narrow gorge of the river.
The reservoir is used for fishing and water activities, including kayaking. There are several places along its shores from which to enjoy the view, although access varies. The lower tracks leading towards the water can be difficult for larger vehicles, so it is important to assess the route before leaving the main road. The upper esplanade was suitable for our motorhome.
The nearby village of Sopeira is small but has an important historical building: the Monastery of Santa Maria de Alaón. The monastery has medieval origins and its Romanesque church was consecrated in 1123. It played an important religious and cultural role in the history of the County of Ribagorza. The church survives today, while much of the original monastic complex has disappeared.
There are also walking routes in the surrounding area. One option near Sopeira leads past the monastery and towards the base of the Escales dam, following the Noguera Ribagorzana through the gorge. The route offers views of the river and the rock walls, although care is needed in places where falling stones may be a risk.
For us, this was a useful free stop with a good view of the reservoir and firm ground, even in wet weather. The nearby road and the dirty parking surface were the main disadvantages. It is worth considering for a break while travelling along the N-230, provided you do not need services and choose the parking area carefully.
