Planning a motorhome trip from Sweden to Denmark offers a few excellent options, each with its own advantages. Here’s a breakdown of the three main routes you can take, based on our own travels.

1. Crossing the Øresund Bridge from Malmö to Copenhagen

This is the most direct and fastest route for getting between the two countries’ capital regions. The Øresund Bridge is a remarkable feat of engineering, linking Malmö, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark, across the Øresund strait. It’s a combined railway and motorway bridge that opened in 2000, and is famous for its unique structure: it begins as a bridge, then transitions into an artificial island, and finally becomes an underwater tunnel on the Danish side. This design was chosen to avoid interfering with air traffic from Copenhagen Airport and to ensure a clear channel for shipping. The bridge offers a quick and scenic journey, but it is important to note that it is a toll road. The cost for a motorhome is considerably higher than for a standard car, and while there are discount passes available for frequent travelers, it’s generally the most expensive option. On one of our trips, we chose to take the bridge to save time and get to our destination in Denmark as quickly as possible.

2. The Helsingborg-Helsingør Ferry

This is a popular and very convenient ferry route, particularly if you are in southern Sweden. The journey from Helsingborg to Helsingør is a short and enjoyable trip across the narrowest part of the Øresund strait, with the crossing taking around 20 minutes. It’s a very frequent service, with ferries operating almost 24 hours a day. For us, this was a great option because it was much cheaper than crossing the bridge with our motorhome. The ferry is a straightforward process and offers a relaxing break from driving, allowing you to get out of the vehicle and enjoy the sea views. We took this ferry on our trip, finding it to be a cost-effective and pleasant way to make the crossing.

3. The Gothenburg-Frederikshavn Ferry

If you are traveling in western Sweden, the ferry from Gothenburg to Frederikshavn is an excellent choice. This is a longer crossing, taking around 3.5 hours, but it’s a direct link to the northern part of Jutland in Denmark. The ferry service is operated by Stena Line, and the journey provides more of a cruise-like experience with on-board amenities. The main advantage of this route is its geographical convenience for those coming from central or northern Sweden. We decided to take this ferry for our return journey back, as it fit perfectly with our travel plans and saved us from a long drive south.
