Some of the most enjoyable stops are not the busiest or the best equipped. Westerholz, on the northern coast of Schleswig-Holstein, proved exactly that. Set beside the beach on the shores of the Flensburg Fjord, it offered the sort of peaceful coastal setting that encourages you to slow down and simply enjoy the landscape.
We chose the official parking area at the end of Haffstraße, beyond the marina and campsite. Reaching it was straightforward, and once there we found a spacious grassy area with plenty of room to manoeuvre, even turning around easily at the far end. The uninterrupted view across the Baltic and the fjord immediately became the highlight of the stop. There were no motorhome services, but that never felt like a disadvantage because the location itself was the main attraction. Parking is subject to a seasonal charge during the day, with payment possible on site or by app, making the whole process simple and well organised.
Westerholz lies on the southern shore of the Flensburg Fjord, one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes in northern Europe. Despite its name, the fjord is not the dramatic, steep-sided landform found in Norway but a glacial inlet created during the last Ice Age. The retreating glaciers left behind a sheltered stretch of water that now forms part of the natural boundary between Germany and Denmark.
For centuries these waters connected communities rather than dividing them. Fishing boats, trading vessels and ferries regularly crossed the fjord, while nearby Flensburg grew into one of the Baltic’s most important ports. Merchants traded grain, timber and rum from across the world, leaving a legacy that can still be seen in the city’s historic warehouses and harbour.
Westerholz itself has retained a much quieter character. Instead of busy promenades, the coastline is lined with grassy meadows, small beaches and low cliffs shaped by wind and waves. The shallow shoreline attracts numerous seabirds throughout the year, while the surrounding countryside offers gentle walking routes with continuous views across the water towards Denmark.
What impressed us most was the sense of space. The parking area never felt cramped, and the open grassy surface blended naturally into the surrounding landscape. Looking out across the fjord, it was easy to forget how close we were to larger towns. The only constant movement came from sailing boats and the changing light reflecting on the water.
Unlike many coastal destinations that rely on extensive facilities and entertainment, Westerholz succeeds through its simplicity. It is a place to enjoy fresh sea air, watch the weather change across the fjord and appreciate one of northern Germany’s most attractive stretches of coastline. Sometimes that is all a stop needs to become memorable.
For anyone exploring Schleswig-Holstein by motorhome, Westerholz offers an excellent opportunity to experience the quieter side of the Baltic coast. It may not appear in every travel guide, but its peaceful atmosphere, generous space and beautiful waterside setting make it a destination well worth including on any journey through the region.
